Sukkot means ‘shelters’ or ‘booths’; specifically, flimsy, make-shift shelters. For centuries during the Festival of Sukkot, Jews have erected such shelters outside, in their gardens. And some actually sleep in these shelters during the eight days of Sukkot. The construction of each sukkah consists of a simple framework covered with foliage, such as palm branches. It is essential that while residing in the sukkah, the stars, the heavens, remain visible through the branches of its 'roof'…. This is a place of vulnerability ~ a reminder that individual and communal safety are ephemeral; that our true security is in HaShem alone.

Sukkot, erected all over the world every year, celebrate the fact that it was HaShem who guided and protected the Israelites during their time of vulnerability in the wilderness; and that it is He who continues to be His people’s ‘place of refuge’. A sukkah is the very antithesis of a strong impermeable tower, or a massive fortress whose walls cannot be breached ~ or any other enduring refuge from the storms of life. It is a reminder of the fragility of the human condition in contrast to the strong but tender protectiveness of HaShem. In sukkot across the globe tonight is an added element of surprise. Ripened fruit and sweets tied to the framework of each sukkah, add a delightful display of colourful abundance and beauty. These symbols of the protection of HaShem are thus complimented by symbols of His provision; specifically, bountiful harvests.

We move from the joyful Festival of Sukkot in the Torah portion, to a description of Israel’s cataclysmic war against Gog and Magog in the Haftarah portion (found in Ezekiel)… The prophet expounds on this war against vulnerable Israel, and on HaShem’s swift response: He will send an earthquake, pestilence, great floods, hailstones and fire—and utterly destroy the enemy. He will do it for the sake of His people ~ and for the sake of His Name… What are the other connections between these polar-opposites of a festival and war? Well, according to Jewish tradition, this war will take place during Tishrei; the month of Sukkot. And the Haftarah text of the first day of Sukkot concludes with the statement that gentile survivors of this war will have to go to Jerusalem annually, at Sukkot, to pay homage to HaShem.

The nation of Israel was vulnerable in the wilderness, Diaspora Jews are vulnerable to this day, the tiny State of Israel in the midst of hostile neighbours is extremely vulnerable and those who have been grafted in to the olive tree of Israel are also vulnerable. Because of our allegiance to HaShem, all are targeted by the Adversary. However, in our topsy-turvy walk of faith we soon learn that God’s strength is made perfect in His people’s weakness and vulnerability… He provided for the nation of Israel in the wilderness and their scattered descendants have never ceased to be a nation in His eyes; and He is the true ‘Iron Dome’ of the Land of Israel today… And since Adonai Tzva’ot (God of Heaven’s armies) alone understands and is able to do battle with the ‘unseen powers and principalities’ beyond our vision, it behooves us to patiently wait on Him in our flimsy sukkot (physical bodies)... and readily obey all promptings of His Spirit. Let us fix our gaze on Him, look up and, with joyful hearts, wait on the King of the Universe ~ our 'Melekh HaOlam'. Glimpses of His glory are there for all to see.... Beyond the palm fronds is evidence of the infinite and eternal One; of HaElyon (The Almighty), who is our protector and provider.

Thus will I display my glory among the nations, so that all the nations will see my judgement when I execute it and my hand when I lay it on them. From that day on, the House of Isra’el will know that I am Adonai their God… “ Ez 39:21-22

The Importance of Seeking A Worshiper’s Heart

The Lord has been speaking to me about equipping Christians with the knowledge of the importance of building an intimate relationship with Him as a prerequisite for praise & worship. I believe it is so much more important than just providing the 'props' to do so. How are we to offer up our praise and worship with flags, streamers, or tambourines if we do not know the Person to whom it is being offerred? The word of God tells us that in order for our sacrifice to be pleasing in His sight, we are to have clean hands and a pure heart, and to do this we need to be washed in His word. We wash our faces every day, and we eat every day. As followers of Jesus, how much more important should our spiritual life and growth, which is eternal, be to us? His word tells us that in order to reap the blessings He has for us, we are to seek His face (see Psalm 24). I believe that people are missing out on so many blessings because they do not invest the time seek His direction and just sit at His feet and listen for that still, small voice (see 1 Kings 19:12). Are we more like Martha and attempt to do things through our own abilities and less like Mary who seeks her Lord and His Presence? What does the Word say about what our priorities should be? (see John 10:38-42) Out of the abundance of the heart, the worship will flow. We need to "abide" and 'be rooted' in Him and in His Word. These are two great words to begin your study!

I believe the Lord has placed this on my heart because those offering praise & worship need to put their relationship with the Lord FIRST, before preparing the routines, and props, and costumes. If what we are calling what we do "ministering" and not performing, I challenge you to examine the fruit of your ministry. Are we more worried about what people think rather than what God thinks? In order for the fruit to be 'sweet' and anointed, we need to be filled to the rim with God's Spirit. This is a daily filling, and comes from spending time with and intimately knowing the Person who created us. Without that relationship, our praise and worship will be fruitless. The closer we walk with Him, the more apparent our "fruit" will be to people, and, in turn, our offering will draw people to Him and we will become transparent. People will be able to see His beautiful heart in us.

WHAT IS DAVIDIC DANCING?

Davidic Dancing is a way of praising God, like with the singing of hymns. In Psalm 149:39(a), the dancing referred to is the kind where everyone danced together, in a circle, in praise of Yahweh.

In Old Testament times, the scriptures were recorded by Jews for Jews. So there was no need to explain the customs. The Psalm writer/s would have been amazed to know that after 2000 years, Gentiles would be reading their writings. Gentiles who have different customs and have little knowledge of the things that were taken for granted in their day. Like, for instance, the fact that everyone participated in cirlce dances and processionals when praising God in the Temple (for as long as the Temple stood in Jerusalem).

So when the Psalm writer wrote in Psalm 149:2-4(a) :

"O Israel, rejoice in your Maker. O people of Jerusalem, exult in your King. Praise his name with dancing, accompanied by tambourine and harp. For the Lord delights in his people..."

he would have expected that everyone understood that dance was a regular occurance in the Temple, as a form of praising God.

In Psalm 26:6 (as it is translated in The Message) the Psalm writer gives us a glimpse of what congregational dance was like during the time when the Psalms were written.

Psalm 26:6 The Message

" I scrub my hands with purest soap, then join hands with the others in the great circle, dancing around your altar, God, singing God-songs at the top of my lungs, telling God-stories."

In the early days of the Christian Church, congregational dance continued as a means of praising God and 2 of the earliest liturgical writers, Mater Hippolytus (200 AD) and Justin Martyr (100-165 AD) both describe, in detail, the use of joyful circle dances as part of the church liturgies ( "liturgy" refers to the things that the congregation participated in, in the church service).

There are many quotes from the early Church Fathers, encouraging people to praise God with dancing.

Here is one of them:

Quote from Ambrose (390 AD)

"Let's dance as David did. Let's not be ashamed to show adoration of God. Dance uplifts the body above the earth into the heavenlies. Dance bound up with faith is a testimony to the living grace of God. He who dances as David danced, dances in grace."

So let us joyfully praise our God, in the dance as well as with singing and music!

When I was younger I went to a Catholic church where all we were allowed to do was sing from a small book that was in the small pocket of all the pews. I never really knew anything else. I had a new music teacher start teaching at the Catholic school I attended. She came in with some radical ideas. She started a sort of small revolution .She brought in some songs that weren’t in the little book and even encouraged everyone to clap in the church which was unheard of back then. Well unfortunately so many people complained about her that after about a year she was gone. It went back to the hymnal book again. I really liked that lady. Anyway, I felt bored to be honest. It felt like something was missing. What I thought of Yahweh was that He looked old and was not a very happy individual. I didn't really know Him at all. Then I became a Christian many years later. I saw a big difference in worship. They clapped and sang with joy and I truly felt a spiritual uplifting in my heart. This was one of those things that made me realize I had come to the right place. Later on as time passed I returned to the world and basically left all the biblical things I once knew. About 5 yrs later I came to my senses and returned to my Biblical faith. I returned to find that the congregation I attended started to look into the biblical Hebraic origins of scripture. They had deeply researched the Word and found that dancing was something that was done in praise and worship, that and also the playing of Instruments and many other things other than just clapping. Our Pastor Patrick Hadley started teaching on worship and praise from the biblical understanding. The congregation immediately embraced it and fell in love with it. My Father’s house Ministries is one of several congregations who have changed and incorporated this biblical way of worship into our every service. We enjoy it so much. Some still clap and dance at their seat. Others play tambourines and various instruments. Then we have those who come together at the front of the chapel and do the biblical circle dances. Whether you dance with the group or dance alone. It is a true blessing to dance before the King of Kings. I have played the drum and the tambourine many times. I must admit I am partial to dancing with the tambourine or dancing before him waving a flag. I truly feel His presence and sometimes feel like I’m dancing in His Throne room. It is truly a blessing to have come to this biblical understanding of worship in the dance. Please share how you came to know worship in the dance and how this has effected your spiritual growth.

This is a short study looking into whether or not there is evidence of Yashua the Messiah Worshiping or Praising Elohim in Dance. In Luke 10:1 you will find that Yashua sent out 70 men two by two into every city that He was about to go into….

Luk 10:1 And after this the Master appointed seventy others, and sent them two by two ahead of Him into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.

*Luk 10:2 Then He said to them, "The harvest indeed is great, but the workers are few, therefore pray the Master of the harvest to send out workers into His harvest.

KJV
Luk 10:17 AndG1161 theG3588 seventyG1440 returned againG5290 withG3326 joy,G5479 saying,G3004 Lord,G2962 evenG2532 theG3588 devilsG1140 are subject untoG5293 usG2254 throughG1722 thyG4675 name.G3686

Luk 10:18 AndG1161 he saidG2036 unto them,G846 I beheldG2334 SatanG4567 asG5613 lightningG796 fallG4098 fromG1537 heaven.G3772

Luk 10:19 Behold,G2400 I giveG1325 unto youG5213 powerG1849 to treadG3961 onG1883 serpentsG3789 andG2532 scorpions,G4651 andG2532 overG1909 allG3956 theG3588 powerG1411 of theG3588 enemy:G2190 andG2532 nothingG3762 shall by any meansG3364 hurtG91 you.G5209

Luk 10:20 NotwithstandingG4133 inG1722 thisG5129 rejoiceG5463 not,G3361 thatG3754 theG3588 spiritsG4151 are subjectG5293 unto you;G5213 butG1161 ratherG3123 rejoice,G5463 becauseG3754 yourG5216 namesG3686 are writtenG1125 inG1722 heaven.G3772

Luk 10:21 InG1722 thatG846 hourG5610 JesusG2424 rejoicedG21 in spirit,G4151 andG2532 said,G2036 I thankG1843 thee,G4671 O Father,G3962 LordG2962 of heavenG3772 andG2532 earth,G1093 thatG3754 thou hast hidG613 these thingsG5023 fromG575 the wiseG4680 andG2532 prudent,G4908 andG2532 hast revealedG601 themG846 unto babes:G3516 even so,G3483 Father;G3962 forG3754 soG3779 it seemedG1096 goodG2107 in thy sight.G1715 G4675 (see Strongs translation to highlighted words below)

Luk 10:22 All thingsG3956 are deliveredG3860 to meG3427 ofG5259 myG3450 Father:G3962 andG2532 no manG3762 knowethG1097 whoG5101 theG3588 SonG5207 is,G2076 butG1508 theG3588 Father;G3962 andG2532 whoG5101 theG3588 FatherG3962 is,G2076 butG1508 theG3588 Son,G5207 andG2532 he to whomG3739 G1437 theG3588 SonG5207 willG1014 revealG601 him.
Scriptures Version

Luk 10:17 And the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Master, even the demons are subject to us in Your Name.”

Luk 10:18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan falling out of the heaven as lightning.

Luk 10:19 “See, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and none at all shall hurt you.

Luk 10:20 “But do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names have been written in the heavens.”

Luk 10:21 In that hour יהושע exulted in the Spirit and said, “I praise You, Father, Master of the heaven and of the earth, that You have hidden these matters from clever and learned ones, and did reveal them to babes. Yea, Father, because thus it was well-pleasing in Your sight.

Luk 10:22 “All has been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is, except the Father, and who the Father is, except the Son, and he to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.”

Rejoice G21
ἀγαλλιάω
agalliaō
ag-al-lee-ah'-o
From ἄγαν agan (much) and G242; properly to jump for joy, that is, exult: - be (exceeding) glad, with exceeding joy, rejoice (greatly).

G242
ἅλλομαι
hallomai
hal'-lom-ahee
Middle voice of apparently a primary verb; to jump; figuratively to gush: - leap, spring up.

Yashua “rejoiced”, by jumped for joy, or dancing .Yashua declared,
Scriptures version:
Luk 10:19 “See, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and none at all shall hurt you.
Luk 10:20 “But do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names have been written in the heavens.”

So what exactly does this all mean??.......

The seventy caused Yashua to Rejoice or Dance in the Spirit. But why did He rejoice in dance? Was it because the demons were subject to the 70? Certainly not, in fact He told them not to rejoice because of that (Luke 10:19).Yashua was rejoicing in the Spirit because their names are written in the Heavens (in the Book of Life). After this He rejoices .Isn’t it interesting that He asked them to rejoice for their salvation and immediately afterward demonstrates to them what He considered an appropriate display of rejoicing. Yashua even makes it clear what He is doing by declaring while he Rejoiced “I praise You, Father, Master of the heaven and of the earth, that You have hidden these matters from clever and learned ones……” .How awesome our Master and Savior is. Just as He taught His people how to pray He is instructing us how to rejoice .It is hidden in plain view. We are to remember that He taught us to walk as He walked:
KJV
1 John 2:6 He that saithG3004 he abidethG3306 inG1722 HimG846 oughtG3784 himselfG848 alsoG2532 soG3779 to walk,G4043 even asG2531 HeG1565 walked.G4043

G4043
περιπατέω
peripateō
per-ee-pat-eh'-o
From G4012 and G3961; to tread all around, that is, walk at large (especially as proof of ability); figuratively to live, deport oneself, follow (as a companion or votary): - go, be occupied with, walk (about).
After carefully looking into Strongs G4043, to walk as Yashua walks according to the scriptures means to live, follow, as in “follow the Path that He is on”
Yashua would never lead us astray or do something that would cause one of His children to stumble or fall. But He danced,He skipped and jumped for joy in the Spirit. Hey, don’t kill the messenger …….

I will go further to say that the same things that made Yashua dance then, causes Him to dance now. We need to understand that Elohim is ready to start the dance of victory for you and your congregation. The Ruach Ha Kodesh (Holy Spirit) may be asking you, “May I have this dance?”…………..

Thank you my friends, till our next treasure hunt…..
Michelle Hernandez
Michelle@HebraicDance.com

http://www.HebraicDance.com
© 2010 by Michelle Hernandez.
